Meridian Massage (Tui Na)
Meridian Massage
Meridian Massage, also known as Tui Na (pronounced "twee-nah") is an ancient therapeutic bodywork and one of the core pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It uses targeted techniques like pressing, kneading, rolling, and stretching along acupuncture meridians to unblock energy, promote blood flow, and heal musculoskeletal issues from within.
How Tui Na Works:
Tui Na translates to "push and grasp". The practitioner uses fingers, hands, elbows, and knees to manipulate muscles, tendons, and joints.
-
The Goal: It aims to improve the flow of Qi. Qi is your body's vital life force or energy.
-
The Philosophy: Think of your body as a garden. If a hose is bent, water stops flowing. Tui Na removes the "kinks" or blockages in your energy pathways (called meridians) so your body can heal itself.
What to Expect at a Session:
-
The Clothes: Tui Na is usually performed while you are fully clothed or wearing a thin gown, often over a sheet or towel.
-
The Oils: Unlike a Swedish massage, practitioners generally do not use oils.
-
The Plan: A typical session lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. It may be combined with other TCM treatments like acupuncture or cupping.
